University Lacrosse Team

Lacrosse is very popular game in America and Canada. At every level u can find the players taking part and enjoying the game. In the educational institutions, the game is also very popular. Considering the popularity of the game, it has been a part of college and universities sports. Many universities and colleges have their own team in which consist of the fine and talented players of the college and university. Events have been held for both men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

The university lacrosse competitions are governed under the supervision of NCAA. NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association, which is the governing body for all the college and university sports in the country. The competitions are further divided into three divisions, which have been named as division1, division 2, and division 3. Most enthusiastic play has been watched in the division 1 where top rivalries among the teams have been seen throughout the year. In men’s division one 57 teams participate, division 2 comprises of 32 teams, and 131 teams take part in the division 3. In women’s division 1 there are 83 teams, in division 37 and 154 teams take part in the division 3 competitions.

In university lacrosse teams, the team with the top record is Johns Hopkins, which has a championship record of 9-8 showing their dominance. Next number in the top teams is given to the Syracuse, which has a track record of 8-5. However, the NCAA committee later vacated the cup victory of Syracuse in 1990 due to the reason of infraction. The next top team in the list is Princeton with a record of 6-2. NCAA started the competition in 1971. The championship is gaining its popularity day by day. This is cleared due to the fact that the number of spectators coming to see the competition has increased over the years.

NCAA also organizes the competition among the women’s universities teams every year in which women athlete takes part with full spirit and enthusiasm. The team of Maryland has proved its dominance over the years in this division and has won total of 9 titles in the championship.

Their consecutive tournament-wining reign was 7 years long. From 1995 to 2001 they where crowned as the champion in the women division. Their dominance can also be observed from the fact that the teams with the 2nd highest number of titles, Princeton, Virginia and northwestern, have won 3 titles each. Women’s lacrosse championship was started in year 1982 when Massachusetts won its maiden and only title.

There are some scandals associated with the university lacrosse teams. The scandal which caught the attention of the people most was duke lacrosse rape case back in 2006 in which players were later cleared from the case. A stripper falsely accused three players from the lacrosse team of duke for the rape. North Carolina Attorney General cleared the players from this case without any charges but this was a big hit for the teams as this case diverted their attention from the game. Syracuse’s victory in the year 1990 due to the infraction charges was vacated. In women’s division Trenton state also had to vacate the championship title due to the penalties from the NCAA back in year 1992. Beside these controversial incidents, the game is one of the top games played in the country.

University teams from all over the country take part in the competitions and make the event colorful and interesting.
