Volleyball Rules

Every game is played under certain rules and regulations. Similar is the case with the game of volleyball. Rules of volleyball can be categorized as two types of volleyball rules. First are the basic rules of volleyball and other are the advanced or official rules for volleyball. Variation in volleyball game rules is also observed when game is played on the different levels i.e. for college level volleyball official rules like height of net may vary from the official rules.

As basic volleyball rules court dimensions, ball standards and basic game play rules are defined. According to the rules for the game volleyball court dimensions is 18m x 9m, which is divided into half by a high net in the centre. Ball standards for volleyball ball are also the part of the rules in volleyball. Ball standards have been defined for the volleyball ball by FIVB and for a standard game these regulations must be followed. As far as basic game play rules of volleyball are concerned the main aim for all the players is to fall the ball in the opposite court. The service must be served behind the service line. Player’s feet touching service line may also be regarded a foul. The ball going out of the court is also as a foul and the opposing team wins the point as a result.

FIVB is the governing body of the volleyball. FIVB also defines all the rules and regulations of volleyball to be observed in the international tournaments. However, at other levels the rules for playing volleyball may vary a bit. The main variation observed from the official volleyball rules by FIVB in these other level volleyball competitions. For this reason you may observe a bit different high school volleyball rules. The governing body of the high school volleyball defines rules for high school volleyball. There is variation in rules of volleyball like net height etc. at the high school and college level volleyball. Any variation in the rules of volleyball to be made is first experimentally implemented in college and school level competitions. If the change in rule of the game is beneficial for the game, the change is implemented by FIV.

Over the years the variation in volleyball rules has also been made by FIVB. The change in official rules for volleyball like player variation rule, service touching the net and other such rules were changed to make the game more exciting and energetic. In 1999 a major changes in rules for the game volleyball were made. The set, which consisted of 15 points, previously was made to be of 25 points. Also the change in the rule that team can score on its serve was also changed and now the point in scored even if opposing team is serving. In the year 2000, the service touching the net was also allowed. If you are playing some other variation of the volleyball game like beach volleyball then indoor volleyball rules are not implemented in those games. FIVB has defined rules for the commonly played variations of volleyball as well which are to be observed in those games. You may also observe indoor volleyball rule in other variations due to the fact that those variations are evolved from the indoor volleyball. Otherwise, while playing the game of volleyball, you must follow the rules of particular variation.
